We now have a 2 bed cabin available on Airbnb .
The Studio is at the foot of Cribarth, The Sleeping Giant . This photo shows the uncanny sky-line that gave the mountain this enchanting name. It came from sands-walks.blogspot, where there is great descriptions of walking around here.
Osprey Studios sits at the foot of Cribarth, The Sleeping Giant mountain at the southwest gateway into the stunning Brecon Beacons National Park. The area is a Geo-Park, full of fascinating rock formations and caves that influence my sculpture as much as the rolling sky-lines of the mountains. Craig y Nos Castle, now a lovely, unique Hotel is just down the road and next door to that is Craig y Nos Country Park with an excellent, friendly cafe/ restaurant, Changing Seasons Tea Rooms, where they do gorgeous, home-cooked food. There is easy parking, and beautiful, gentle walks through the grounds of the Castle.
Less than a mile on is the fantastic Dan yr Ogof National Show Caves, deservedly an award-winning Day Out. Henrydd Falls, seen in the Batman 4 Film is along the wonderful gorge that I visit regularly. It inspired the River Series.
There are a lot of walks radiating from the Studio and I would be delighted to point you in the right direction. You can leave your car here with out any problem. There are several lovely Pubs serving very good food and real Ales near-by too; The Penycae Inn, The Ancient Briton and The Abercrave Inn.
Cycling is really popular here in the park. Some stunning routes are shown here.
I have always worked from home, even when I lived in my Van (long time ago!). It is warm and comfortable, convenient and peaceful. I’m there for my kids. In ceramics timing is everything; little 15 minute jobs interspersed with hours of drying are spread mercilessly over 24 /7 making a distant Workshop a torment!
Here in Penycae I have lots of space, out-buildings for the Kiln, plenty of parking for visiting groups and good access with wide doors for getting awkward, heavy sculpture in and out. The Brecon to Swansea X63 bus comes right to the door yet the street is exceptionally quiet so my boys can have their own life. Everything we need is within 25 miles.
Having an amazing landscape right on my door step is a constant source of joy and fascination. I walk the mountains and rivers and let the images and forms build them selves. In the Studio music keeps those experiences alive and vivid throughout the slow making process.
There is plenty of easy parking in front and good access into the building. I can deliver to you in my Van or arrange assistance to load your vehicle if you are picking up heavy sculptures. Most pieces will easily fit in a car.
Workshops and tuition are held in The Studio; it is interesting to see work in progress, everything we need is on hand. I have a lot of experience and expertise and I am more than happy to share it with you in Workshops that will guide you towards your own sculptural voice. I specialise in getting beginners started; most of my techniques are very straight-forward. We would design a course to suit your specific needs; you might only need an hour of advice. The fee is £30 p/hr + materials kept.
The Osprey Studios cabin sleeps 2 if you want to stay on site. It’s not posh, it’s small, cosy, peaceful, private and practical. You can do your own art work in there on the good sized table. It costs £40 per night and home-cooked meals are £5-£10 each. You are very welcome to stay with out taking a course. All the details are here.
Heavy-duty tables and a flexible floor-plan allow me to build sculptures up to 6 metres long x 2 metres high.
Wheels and floor-space allow me to turn sculptures to ensure there is real interest and un-expected form in every view
Clay is stored against the wall inside the Studio to protect it from frost but also so that it is warm to use. You can purchase the clays I use here by the Kilo. I recycle inside, in small batches so that it actually gets done! Scrap clay is stored in bags out-side and the frost breaks it up beautifully. It is soaked in a bin of water still in it’s bag to make it easy to remove. It gets drained in a pile, the slugs, spiders and worms rinsed off the bags and then moved indoors ready to be dried to a useable consistency.
I will fire for other people in my Cromartie Work-horse Oval electric kiln (40″w x 33″d x 25″h) for a negotiable fee.
Do feel very welcome to make an appointment to visit to talk about the Sculpture you are thinking about buying.
